Overview

“Commie Hawks” is a unique game set in a world where Communism and Capitalism are in a state of war and stalemate. In this pixel art environment, players follow the adventures of the main hero, Commie Hawks. My role was to design the UI/UX, including the overall user experience, backgrounds, and UI assets to enhance the gameplay experience.

Style Guide

The UI design for “Commie Hawks” draws inspiration from a retro, pixel art aesthetic that emphasizes clarity and functionality. The design elements were crafted to blend seamlessly with the game’s thematic setting of a war between Communism and Capitalism, using a vibrant yet gritty color palette and detailed pixel art.

For Commie Hawks, I selected the Joystix font, which perfectly encapsulates the retro pixel art aesthetic. This choice ensures that the typography complements the game’s unique theme and visual style without detracting from the immersive experience. The font enhances the nostalgic, arcade-like feel of the game while maintaining excellent readability and visual appeal.

Background

I created a detailed background to represent the duality between Communism and Capitalism, a central theme in “Commie Hawks.” The background features skyscrapers with an American Communist flag on the left and a Capitalist flag on the right, symbolizing the ongoing clash between these two ideologies. The retro color palette with a communist vibe adds to the immersive atmosphere, enhancing the game’s thematic depth and visual appeal.

How to create a victory screen that is both informative and visually engaging, while fitting within the game’s unique aesthetic.

Solution 1

I designed a USSR-style passport victory screen to display the player’s level stats and total points. This design choice not only provides clear and essential information but also enhances the thematic immersion of the game.

Designing a loading screen that keeps players engaged and matches the overall game aesthetic.

A new loading screen was created to maintain visual interest and ensure smooth transitions between gameplay, reflecting the game’s retro pixel art style.
